A Little Bit About Ballroom Dancing…

ballroomdancers.jpgBallroom dance is a set of partner dances which originated in the Western world. The dances are now enjoyed both socially and competively around the globe. Ballroom dances include such dances as the Waltz, Foxtrot, Eastcost Swing and Tango.

The term "ballroom dancing" applies to any one of the several dances in which two individuals dance with physical contact through their upper or lower bodies or simply their arms - depending on the particular variety of dance. The man "leads" and the lady "follows", which means the man is basically responsible for the choreography and the direction of travel. The lady's responsibility is to follow his lead without apparent effort and to look beautiful. You may have heard of the saying that the man is the "frame" and the lady is the "picture. Some knowledge of known step patterns is essential for both the leader as well as the follower for ballroom dancing.

The term "ballroom dancing" comes from the word ball, which denotes a room where balls may be held: that is, formal social dances. Before radio, television and the internet balls were important social events. The word "ball" drives from the Latin word ballare which means "to dance". In times past, ballroom dancing was considered social dancing for the privileged, leaving folk dancing for the lower classes. Obviously this is no longer the case and ballroom dancing can be enjoyed by all.

A Little Bit About Latin Dances…

latindancers.jpgMost dances that are popular around the world originated in Latin America. Latin dances include the Bolero, Mambo, Salsa, Samba, Rumba, Cha Cha, Merengue, Jive plus the Paso Doble - the list goes on!

Compared to typical ballroom dance, Latin dances are generally faster-paced, more sensual, and have more rhythmic expression.

Music may be Latin American or contemporary popular music.

A Little Bit About Swing Dances….

swingdancers.jpgThe term "swing dance" is commonly used to refer to a group of dances that developed along with the style of jazz music in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

Swing dancing took the world by storm in the 1930's, reaching its peak in 1937, but the real birth of swing was in the 1920's, during the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time of great creativity and innovation for African American writers, artists, and musicians, and swing was just one of many art forms to prosper at that time.

Swing dances include dances such as the Jive and Eastcoast Swing.
